Radio Roots

My first microphone was attached like plumbing to a cabinet and turntable at McGuire VA Hospital in Richmond, Va. I was a Huguenot High School student teaching myself radio as a volunteer.

Weekends were radio

Va. Tech’s student station WUVT was instantly home. I became General Manager in my senior year (1972) and part of putting WUVT-FM-FM on the air.
Roanoke’s first stereo FM, WPVR first paid me for weekends hosting elevator music from studios in the Hotel Roanoke. Room service!
Or, was WPUV in Pulaski first? Or, WJJJ in Christiansburg? Hmmm.
Ultimately came the part-time gig of my dreams since childhood – a show on WRVA in hometown, Richmond, Va.
The Saturday night “Gold Show” ran 9-yrs. with me interviewing Pat Boone, Harry Chapin, members of the Four Tops, Mamas & the Papas, even Stan Freberg. I loved playing the hits and honoring those who wrote the soundtrack of our lives. Those folks too often ended life with very little materially.
Finally, I produced, “Living Successfully”. The late, Dr. Wayne Dyer, joined me on show #1 of this talk show’s 12-year run. Thanks to Carolyn Craft and Jeff Hunt, the show was added to Bill Turner’s, WISDOM Channel. With them, Living Successfully was among the first shows on Sirius Satellite.
Oh, and video work? As with my other, full-time career in information technology, audio/video production was always part of the job. Today, Living Successfully LLC is my service and pleasure.
Today it’s an honor to serve on three Boards of Directors for community non-profits: The Center for Therapeutic Justice, Akhand Param Dham of America and the Saluda Historic Depot & Museum.
